Act Now: Ask the Governor to Veto SB 48!

by Rebecca Burgoyne,

SB 48 (Leno, D-San Francisco) passed the Assembly last week 50-26 and is now on the governor’s desk for his signature or veto. Gov. Jerry Brown has less than two weeks to make a decision and act on this legislation that would force a blatant pro-homosexual history curricula on innocent young children. Please contact Gov. Brown and ask for his veto of this measure.

The approval of a majority-party budget last month not only cleared the way for legislators to get paid, but it also allows them to return home this weekend for a month-long summer recess. With legislators at home in their districts, make an appointment to meet with your representatives and let them know your opinions on their votes on bills like SB 48. Express your opinions and get involved. When legislators return to Sacramento in mid-August, it will be for a few short weeks until session ends September 9.

Citizens in Congressional District 36 – which covers the beach cities south of Los Angeles International Airport – have a unique opportunity  tomorrow. The resignation of Representative Jane Harmon (D) paved the way for a special election to fill her office. Democratic turf, the outcome should be no surprise, but disappointment with a faltering economy and federal policies have paved the way for a possible upset. The race between Democrat Janice Hahn and Republican Craig Huey hinges on turn out, and has Democrats on edge and Republicans eyeing a victory that could rival the upset last year when underdog Scott Brown, a Republican, won election in former Sen. Edward Kennedy’s Massachusetts district.
