GO BIG OR GO HOME!

This past week, I had the opportunity to participate and speak at events supporting pro-life nurses, Christian worldview resources, Southern Baptist pastors, and people of influence in the Fresno area. From the content at each of these gatherings it was clear: social and fiscal issues are at the forefront of people’s minds, and circumstances are bringing more people to the voting booth.

Political writers and commentators are saying this coming Tuesday will be noted in American history as one of our most important days. The “throw the bums out” (of office) theme has continued right up to the end, with polling supporting that many incumbents, and especially Democrat incumbents, stand to lose their re-election bids.

Nationally, household names like Russ Feingold, Barney Frank and Harry Reid are at risk of losing their seats, while in California Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is facing a serious test from California Assemblyman Van Tran. In addition, this morning’s Rasmussen poll of California’s gubernatorial race has Meg Whitman back at “toss-up” against career politician Jerry Brown, and Carly Fiorina is within reach to send U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer packing.

Former President Bill Clinton’s now infamous quote, “It’s the economy, stupid,” is a large part of voters’ motivation, with the grassroots work of the Tea Party having a solid impact on many races. The severe recession and growing distrust for the economic decisions of the Obama administration, coupled with voting patterns of our representatives, has every poll suggesting that majority vote in the U.S. House of Representatives will return to the Republican party, and the current Senate’s Democrat majority is even in question after Tuesday’s vote.

Members of the clergy are taking more public stands for social issues like preborn human life, biblical marriage, and the protection of our religious speech, and asking their congregations to do the same. Of the many messages I’ve heard from pulpits and lecterns, the following three are always stated:
  • Act upon our freedom to participate in government as voting citizens
  • Vote according to our foundational worldviews, not a political party line
  • Pray for God’s will to take place for this country, this world, and His people

Starting this Monday night at 7:00 pm, a 24-hour prayer vigil will take place at Church on the Way in Sherman Oaks (San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles). Many pastors and lay people will be leading in prayer on many issues, but God’s power and protection will be the over-arching theme as we pray. Netz Gomez, pastor of Houses of Light church in Northridge and host of a daily talk show on Nueva Vida, a top-rated Spanish-language radio network, initiated this time of prayer and praise. I have the pleasure of leading people in prayer for marriage’s future during this time of worship.

Many people have been committed to praying and fasting for 40 days, and that season of commitment ends tomorrow for many. Regardless of your plans surrounding this coming Tuesday’s national election, include prayer for this nation and this state in your activities. Throughout history God has always looked for, and responded to, a people’s repentance and renewed commitment to Him.

Ron Prentice
