Good-bye, Will Schuster

by Ron Prentice,
Chief Executive Officer

I fell prey to temptation. My ears were being tickled. But I have corrected my path!

Last night, I watched Glee for the last time. A television show about a group of high school students in their school’s musical performing club, their teacher (Will Schuster), and other faculty members of the school, Glee has devolved into a worldview-training course. And its worldview is without hope.

The music of the show is what has drawn me, and I will miss it. But it is an understatement to say that the show is edgy. The characters include a homosexual boy, bisexual girls, and the caricature of a prude, virgin, female teacher. Unfortunately, with the exception of the teacher, the characters reflect the make-up of a real high school campus, with references to random sexual hook-ups and portrayals of drunkenness.

Standard to the majority of television series, the first season impresses viewers with good story lines, and in this case, exceptional musical talent. Then, more overt worldview messages enter into the scripts. Last night, Glee’s message was that no adolescent could realistically fend off the temptations of sexual involvement, and teachers’ and parents’ primary responsibility is to instruct these mindless sexual automatons (i.e., teens) on the proper use of condoms.

In addition, the homosexual character’s “loving” father handed his son pamphlets on safe sex between boys.

Throughout all of time, “serpents” in our world continue to encourage us to call lies the truth, and the truth, lies. Every direction we look people are pursuing lies, while in extreme hunger for truth and hope.

More and more, the Church is taking on its role, assisting the Redeemer. The hope of redemption is especially needed in our schools, where children’s lives are wounded by divorce, neglect, abuse, and even the lies of media. I read and hear of churches taking on their neighborhood’s schools, providing real-life models of hope as volunteers in the classroom and on the athletic fields.

Imagine this: a coalition of churches commits to provide sexual education from a biblical worldview to their area’s children, inviting parents to pull their kids from the “morally neutral” sex-ed courses in public school. This is real support, giving real hope.

First things first: I will contact the FOX Broadcasting Company with my opinions regarding Glee. Then, I need to turn away from the lies I’m being fed and “get my hands dirty” with those who have no idea of the redemption – the Truth – available to them. This is God’s call upon us all.
