LEGISLATIVE ALERT

by Ron Prentice
Chief Executive Officer

Young people are often treated as a “target audience” for corporate and media messages that by-pass parents and undermine parental authority and moral values.                            U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

Yesterday morning the California Assembly passed Senate Bill 48, which would mandate that the role and contributions of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender persons must be included in California’s social science instructional curricula. This was the bill’s final necessary step before going to Governor Jerry Brown for his veto or signature into law.

SB 48 passed by a vote of 49-25, with only one Republican, Nathan Fletcher, voting in favor of its passage. Fletcher is also campaigning to become the next mayor of the city of San Diego.

If this bill is signed into law, children as young as kindergarten age can be exposed to these alternative sexual orientations. In addition, because the curriculum would not reside in “sexual education” courses, parents will not be informed when children participate in the content, nor will parents have the legal right to pull their children from this instruction.

SB 48 specifically states that no content within this curriculum may “contain any matter reflecting adversely upon persons because of their…sexual orientation.” Passing this measure marks the California Legislature’s intention to indoctrinate all public school children with a positive perspective on alternative sexual orientations and behaviors.

Recently appointed to the Catholic Diocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Jose Gomez released a statement yesterday specific to government intrusion into the rights and responsibilities of parents.

[Senate Bill 48] amounts to the government rewriting history books based on pressure-group politics. It is also another example of the government interfering with parents’ rights to be their children’s primary educators.

Archbishop Gomez also took exception to Assembly Bill 499, which if passed would permit children as young as 12 years of age to receive vaccinations or medical treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, outside a parent’s or guardian’s knowledge.

The California State Catholic Conference is urging that both of these bills be rejected. As we pray for one another this week, let us commit ourselves to promoting the God-given rights of parents and families in California and in our country.

This morning in Sacramento, a coalition of organizations is meeting to strategize our approach to Gov. Brown, seeking his veto of these bills. California Family Council will keep you updated on the next steps, and we will appreciate your active participation to keep these laws, and others, from becoming law.

Please do all you can to inform your families, friends, co-workers and church communities of the Legislature’s actions by forwarding this alert. Be ready to take action on behalf of parents’ rights and innocent children.
