CFC Donor: “Ron, I’ve been following CFC and I appreciate how the organization is building its reputation.”

Me: “Well, thank you! We’re pleased with our work so far, and have a long-term plan that we know will have a transforming affect on California and the country.”

CFC Donor: “What stands out for me is that CFC has successfully built coalitions, Ron. As I interact with many groups, both in California and nationally, it’s evident that CFC has created working relationships of trust and mutual respect.”

Me: “Oh, you’re too kind. One of our primary objectives since we envisioned CFC’s founding has been to create strength through coalition, so I’m glad to hear your feedback. Building and maintaining relationships takes a lot of time and energy, but we know it is critical to bringing about change.”

CFC Donor: “Labor costs money! How is CFC doing in that area?”

CFC Donor: “Well, I’d like to help. I’d like to give CFC a gift up to $50,000.”

Me: (gulp)

CFC Donor: “But I’d like you to let other friends of CFC know that I will match everyone else’s gift, dollar for dollar. I like to do it this way to encourage other people to step up, too.”
