Profitable for (marriage) training

Of the many enduring lessons that fill my mind from the contents of the Truth Project worldview DVD series, these words from Dr. Del Tackett come to my mind especially often: Some believe that paying attention to social issues is like polishing brass on the Titanic; but babies in the womb are more than brass on a ship!  They are human beings created in the image of God. (paraphrased)

Of course, a related social issue - marriage - continues to loom large, evidenced most recently by the failed attempt in the Maryland House of Delegates to bring same-sex marriage to a vote.  Special gratitude goes to the coalition of African-American pastors who stood tall against the tide and battled for the families of their communities.

Yesterday, an administrator at a major university asked me to explain why I fight for the protection of traditional marriage.  It was clear that she did not agree with a viewpoint that would keep any two people “in love” from the marriage altar.

So here is how I responded:
  • The laws of nature (and nature’s God) attest to the biological inter-relationship intended between man and woman.  This is the only human pairing that can procreate.
  • Over the course of thousands of years, man-woman marriage has been replicated in diverse and separate cultures. In other words, marriage is not specific to one religion, and has been historically honored by non-religious groups.
  • Marriage is not a right, but a privilege created by societies and governments for benefit to their common good and generational stability.
  • The best environment for any child is in a functional family with both a mother and a father.
Not surprisingly, the objective research stated above aligns with a biblical worldview!  The biblical texts regarding the sanctity of man-woman marriage were not created in a vacuum; rather, all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16 EVS).  And the purpose of this righteousness is not to provoke arrogance, but to bring glory to God.  That is a high and eternal calling, far different from polishing brass on a soon-to-sink ship.

Have a great weekend, and thank you for your support of California Family Council!

Sincerely,
