Senator Evans:

As the Senate Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday, April 5, to consider Senate Bill 48, California Family Council asks for your “no” vote.

SB 48’s stated purpose is to mandate that California’s social science curriculum include the contributions of homosexuals, bisexuals, and transsexuals to contemporary society. However, the identification and selection of significant contributors to contemporary society should not be based solely on one’s sexual orientation.

Neither should anyone deny – based on sexual orientation – the mention of a person’s significant contributions to society. However, never before in social science textbooks has sexual orientation, of any kind, been a mandated factor by which to select contributors, nor has law mandated the mention of a contributor’s sexual orientation.

Senate Bill 48, if passed, would place decisions regarding age-appropriateness of content and issues of academic accuracy outside the awareness of parents, who are primarily responsible for the welfare of their children.

The consequence of SB 48’s passage is the advancement of a pro-homosexual worldview in the public classroom, and the marginalization of all worldviews that conflict with such a view. This marginalization is precisely the long-held complaint of the homosexual lobby, and mandating the reverse is just as harmful. In addition, this bill promotes one’s sexual identity over and above one’s societal contributions.

Although SB 48 is termed an “anti-bullying” component to public education, there are now significant protections for the LGBT community in education, employment, and family law. Please vote “no” on SB 48.

Sincerely,
Ron Prentice
