Ronald Reagan. . .and Harvey Milk

by Rebecca Burgoyne, CFC Research Analyst

May 3, 2010

Later this month, many California public-school students may learn about homosexual icon Harvey Milk on his May 22 birthday.  Legislation passed last year (
SB 572) added Milk as a “days of special significance” honoree in the public schools.  On these days, public schools are encouraged to conduct “suitable commemorative exercises,” honoring Milk alongside teachers, John Muir, and the California poppy.  On Harvey Milk Day, schools are encouraged to hold “exercises remembering the life of Harvey Milk, recognizing his accomplishments, and familiarizing pupils with the contributions he made to this state.”

This week, the Assembly Education Committee will discuss the addition of a fifth day of special significance in the public schools.  AB 2412 (Tran, R-Costa Mesa) would add Ronald Reagan, actor, California governor, and our 40th president, to this list of honorees in our public schools.  Reagan would be honored on his February 6 birthday, and children would learn about his life, his accomplishments and the contributions he made to our state.

President’s Day also falls in February, and for many generations school children have learned about two other great men who share that birth month, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  Other states boast presidents as “home-grown” heroes; Massachusetts honors theirs during the month of May.  Surely Ronald Reagan, often listed as one of our best-loved presidents, deserves recognition in California schools.
