Who Speaks for Truth?

By Ron Prentice

In this information age, people are always seeking more – more facts, more gossip, more “intel.”  For instance, this week’s People magazine may be its highest seller ever, flying off the stands as Tiger Woods’ ex-wife, Elin, tells her side of their marriage’s demise.  We love to know the inside story.

Even more, we want to know the truth.  We need to know the truth.  Truth provides us with structure around which we build our lives.  Elin Woods built her life around what she thought was true: a devoted husband and father committed to his marriage.  Unfortunately, not all claims of truth turn out to be legitimate, and paths of destruction are the result.

In the recorded words of Jesus in the gospel books, time and again he would preface his words with, “I tell you the truth.”  People pressed in to hear what the Rabbi was about to say.  False teachers were everywhere, speaking lies with authority, and people were ensnared in systems of deception.  Today is no different, and we are hungry for real truth, around which we can build our lives.

So, who speaks for Truth with a capital T?

Pastors?  Priests?  I hope so!  Imagine if every time we sat in the pews we could be greeted with "I tell you the truth," followed by authoritative teaching of scripture. Oh, that pulpits and lecterns could be filled with people unafraid to tell the Truth!  I’m reminded of a discussion on a ski lift years ago with a Georgia pastor.  He was told by his denominational leadership to alter the Truth or face dismissal.  In his southern accent he said to me, “they want me to treat my congregation as infants and only feed them milk, and I know God wants me to develop them into devourers of prime rib!” (1 Cor.3:2; Heb. 5:13)  That church is now thriving in another denomination.

Today, we can no longer depend on clergy alone to be the truth-tellers.  The information age brings more lies than ever before – dressed up as truth – into our homes, schools, businesses, Legislatures, and even churches.

The hunger pangs of our neighbors, our students and our co-workers are growing more intense.  Look around.  You have ready-made relationships with people who need hope.  You and I must speak for Truth.

California Family Council is committed to working alongside you to bring about change in our society.  We do so by keeping you up-to-date on legislation that may impact families and individuals, by partnering with clergy with timely information and education, and by supplying you with resources that help you speak the Truth, such as the Truth Project DVD series.  And California Family Council is committed to the creation of a voter guide that will help you identify candidates who will speak the Truth for us as our representatives in government.

Your help has allowed CFC to lead the battle for the sanctity of marriage (Prop 8), and to battle against the use of human embryos, the legalization of assisted suicide, and pro-homosexual curriculum in schools.

Thank you for your kind support!  We are encouraged by your trust, and in turn, I encourage you to speak the Truth more confidently and graciously than ever before.

Please contact CFC for any help you may need in acquiring resources that will help you speak the Truth.  CFC works in coalition with local, state, and national organizations, and if we do not have the resource, we will find it for you!

Finally, pray for your pastors and priests, that they will be strengthened in their faith to feed us “prime rib,” around which we can build our lives and families.
