This Week Inside the Capitol is a weekly e-mail update of bills monitored by California Family Council. This Week is intended as a brief synopsis to alert you about which bills are being heard and when. For additional information on legislative bills CFC is monitoring please visit our website at www.californiafamily.org
Legislators have returned to Sacramento after observing Presidents’ Day on Monday. First on many legislators’ agendas will be the introduction of new bills before the January 19, 2010 “bill introduction” deadline. Legislators have already introduced approximately 400 bills since January. That number will likely double or triple by Friday’s deadline.
The Legislature and political onlookers will also spend most of this week ascertaining the impact of the Assembly’s rejection of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s nominee for lieutenant governor, Senator Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria). After the Senate approved the governor’s nomination of Senator Maldonado, the Assembly rejected the nomination (37 votes to 35 votes). Despite the Assembly’s rejection, Governor Schwarzenegger has vowed to re-nominate Senator Maldonado when he returns from the Olympics.
While the Maldonado nomination provided great theater last week, Governor Schwarzenegger’s budget proposals will now return to the spotlight. Both the Senate and the Assembly have scheduled floor sessions on Tuesday to discuss the proposals. Several committees, including the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee will take up the issue as well.
